For many years I heard of St John’s book ‘Dark Night of the Soul’.
A couple of years ago I came across a translation by Mirabai Starr
and it has become a favorite. Maybe it should be called
‘The bright night of the soul’.
Below are two verses from Songs of the Soul – the first and the last.
Marie
“On a dark night,
Inflamed by love-longing-
O exquisite risk!
Undetected I slipped away.
My house at last, grown still”.
…………………
“I lost myself, Forgot myself.
I lay my face against the Beloved’s face.
Everything fell away and I left myself behind,
Abandoning my cares
Among the Lilies, forgotten”.
~John of the Cross
