A doctor’s son stumbled over a large stone along the path, breaking his leg. The doctor ran to his son’s rescue and treated him. The boy eventually healed. During this time, the son began to appreciate his father’s great care and felt a renewed sense of love for him. Let us suppose that the father could anticipate this, and unseen by anyone goes ahead of his son to remove the large stone from the path so his son would never have fallen. The boy who knows nothing of this, would not show any particular gratitude towards his father.
How much we want to protect ourselves and our loved ones from falling down! However, in this story we see that after the son has suffered and healed, he has more gratitude and love for his father. For this reason, suffering has the possibility to bring us closer to our Creator, and to increase our love and gratitude.
