Guido d'Arezzo, Italian Benedictine, Music Theorist (990-1050) - Artist Unknown
Guido of Arezzo drew his inspiration
and the syllables for the solfège system from a prayer in
the Hymn to St. John the Baptist:
Latin: Ut queant laxis Resonāre fibrīs, Mīra gestōrum famulī tuōrum, Solve pollūtī labiī reātum, Sāncte Iōannēs.
English: So that your servants may, with loosened voices, resound the wonders of your deeds, cleanse the guilt from our stained lips, O Saint John.
Español: Para que tus siervos puedan exaltar a pleno pulmón las maravillas de tus obras, limpia la culpa de nuestros labios manchados, oh, San Juan.
