The Stoic Wisdom of Seneca the Younger

Seneca the Younger

A gem cannot be polished without friction,
nor a man perfected without trials.

~

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare,
it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.

~

Wherever there is a human being,
there is an opportunity for a kindness.

~

Love in its essence is spiritual fire.

~

We should every night call ourselves to an account:
What infirmity have I mastered today?
What passions opposed?
What temptation resisted?
What virtue acquired?

Our vices will abate of themselves
if they be brought every day
to the shrift.
