The Light of the World

by William Holman Hunt

W.H. Hunt's painting has captured the moment each student should be longing for: The knocking of divinity into one's inner world. If the door is a metaphor for the gate of one's soul, one can envision how much seclusion and forgetfulness the soul has to endure while waiting for the knocking of divinity to be heard. The painter reveals with magnificence the vastness of our worldly backyard within an isolated place where one's inner world can be found. At this darkened doorstep, one should realize how seldom, if ever, this divine gate has been opened...In the meantime, each one of us should have understood that only perfect quiet stillness and emptiness within oneself gives the soul the opportunity to be opened and born.
